Rebellion Box Presentation: A Friends of the PHPL Event

Date: Saturday, March 16 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Location: The Port Hope Public Library, Mary J. Benson Branch
Speaker: Darryl & Christine Withrow

Come learn about Rebellion boxes in this special PHPL Friends of the Library event!

After the Rebellion of 1837, jailed rebels carved beautiful boxes as political statements and mementos for their families. The presentation will include pictures, video and a collection of original and replica boxes. While the prisoners charged with treason waited in Toronto jail to learn their fates, they created over 100 quite lovely wooden boxes inscribed with farewell messages to their families. Darryl Withrow has reproduced many of them accurately and has others that are original. He and his wife Christine will present them in an illustrated historical talk at the Port Hope Public Library.

Admission is by donation, and all proceeds go to the Friends of the Library.
